I may be stretching the theme a bit here.  You do see how the hummingbird’s back glitters, don’t you?

This hummingbird is a lucky shot… I was in Aperture priority because I wasn’t expecting him and was working on the some flowers in and out of Super Macro mode.

It was the normal perfect sunny day and mid-afternoon, worst time to shoot, but I decided to take this photo anyway.  Although I had seen this Saguaro cactus have multiple blooms at once, I had not seen them arranged so close together.  So, I went home for the ladder and camera.

And then forgot about the photos as much attention was diverted to other things…  So when I finally downloaded the photos last night I was amazed that the flowers were not blown out.

I know I didn’t need another Blossom photo…  but I had to share this.

Woo-hoo this is my kind of assignment: “So this Friday’s tip is to stay close to home – in your yard, or at least within a block of home.  Look around to find a unique angle, an interesting view, or perhaps a close up of something that you might otherwise pass by.”

So, I was sitting outside reading a book (on my new iPad if you must know) when my nice neighbor Lola came over and asked if I wanted to see something neat. I make a lot of promises to Lola that I’ll come by and see her  but don’t always follow through.  But hey, sensing a photo opportunity, I grabbed my camera and walked back to her place, which is only a few sites away, certainly qualifying for close to home.

And this is what she had to show me!

I posted some great YELLOW BLOOMS in April… and now see that I should have saved that posting for May. Compared to those flowers, these are bit more orange than yellow. I am figuring out the names of the flowers and will go back to previous flower blog pages and add names IF I can figure them out.  The first flower on this page was easy.

Sunflowers.  Desert Landscape Flower. Note the Mexican Brick Wall in the background. Continue reading »

I actually had to look up the definition for “blossom” when I saw that we had this as a May theme.  ”Yikes,” I said to myself, “How is a ‘blossom” different from a ‘bloom?’ ”   So, now I know.  Blossoms are the flowers (or blooms) that happen on trees and bushes.

Because May Day feels like a day for flowers… and since our Friday assignment is to celebrate Karen’s birthday weekend… I decided to post this photo of pink Blossoms.  I wasn’t so very happy with the focus… so I punched up the clarity a bit with an Aperture preset and thus making the flowers look more painted than photographed. Enjoy!

Maybe if the wind ever stops blowing I’ll give this theme another go.  I saw my first Saguaro “blossom” yesterday… May is the month for these beautiful white flowers to bloom. O.K. I’m still a little confused between “blossom” and “bloom”  — I just know that it means for another month we get to post pics of our  favorite flower shots!
