I’m reaching back to November themes to show off Carl’s early Christmas/Birthday present.  He is making a Quad Helicopter from a kit, specifically the AeroQuad.  Eventually the plan is to add a camera so that it can take photos from the air.   Not sure if it will be one of MY cameras…  anyway, this is fairly cool technology.  Carl’s says that this little board (once completed)  is all you need to make the Segway work.  The red pieces are a 3-axis gyro and a 3-axis accelerometer (used to measure acceleration and is what helps it stand still, which is why it will make a great platform for a camera).

Personally, I like how there is so much red and green in the photo, which makes it look like a Christmas present.

The above is second attempt at improving this photo.  I’m not sure why I’m so intent on posting this… at about this point, I don’t think I even like it!   But, it has been a good photo for trying out the Topaz bundle and Topaz InFocus.  For the above, I cropped it, ran it through deNoise and then InFocus… and then cleaned up the photo a bit in Aperture. And it still looks OOF.

Still in November themes… I took this with this theme in mind… just didn’t get around to posting it!

I tried using the Topaz ReMask to show the whole plate and the placement with leaves… but this proved to be more difficult because of the shadow around the edge of the plate.  So I decided to try a different approach… by cropping it, which I decided I liked better than the whole plate.

I am also experimenting with Topaz InFocus and am finding that program is more difficult to use as well.  I think I ran this photo through deNoise more than twice… but not sure.  I also used Apertures brushes to paint in detail on the leaves… and touch up to get rid of the some of the ceramic plate flaws.  Anyway, if I sound vague, it is because I started this same photo from scratch about 5 times trying different things.

How did it get to be December 1?   I’m still in November themes!

Stopped for hot cocoa after our desert golf game.  A chilly breeze yesterday…. but a fun game.

This was processed in Topaz Adjust – Smooth and Flat and used the Aperture Burn brush to highlight the Thank You words.

Cropped  and then processed withTopaz deJpeg, Topaz Adjust/Simplify  and Topaz deNoise

We drove down to Algodones, Mexico this past Monday to have my teeth cleaned. First time doing this.  While waiting for the next dentist/hygenist, I decided to use my iPod Touch as a camera rather than read my book.  This woman had just had a procedure done and her husband is examining the work.  He had told me a few minutes before she came out that he’d been using this dentist for 5 years.  I liked the way she wanted the assurance that all was o.k. and he was giving it to her.

This was processed with the Topaz products (deJpeg and deNoise), most specifically Topaz Adjust- HDR POP.  Until I ran it through this filter, the interior was dark and unseen.

This is from our desert ride last Thursday.  The vehicle is a a Pinzgauzer.  The park owns a few of these and takes residents out for a free ride once a month during the high season.  FUN!

I was waiting to see if anyone would show up for Shuffleboard (don’t laugh!). When it looked like no one was going to show (again), I started looking around for ways to complete the November themes.  Obviously, I found WOOD… as demonstrated by this shot and the previous.  This wood is used for our monthly campfire gatherings.

I’ve tried several weeks in a row and no one yet has shown up for Shuffleboard, although I am determined to try this game at least once.

These clothespins are inside a red hanging bag with the sunlight behind the bag.  Combination of  Topaz and Aperture post processing.

I was actually intending to photograph a Saguaro cactus  when I saw this little power struggle of desires developing between uncle and nephew yesterday… I used Topaz Simplify Cartoon to help me tell the story.  Don’t worry  the boy eventually ran after uncle… we didn’t leave him in the desert.

When I first saw the theme “brown” I thought “UPS” — thus when I was working on Friday and our UPS man came in to deliver a package… I couldn’t help but ask him if I could take his photo.  He didn’t mind since everyone that was in the office at the time had already complimented him on his new hat.

The weird thing is, when I finally pulled the image out of the camera this morning, his uniform looked army green, not brown.  ”What, the heck?,”  I said to myself.   The UPS logo was still brown, the counter top was still brown and I could see other hints of brown.  But not the uniform and hat.  How’s that for irony!

Regardless, I proceeded to make these changes hoping for the best in the end:

1)  Cropped the image so UPS man filled more of the frame.

2) Auto enhance preset in Aperture

3) Topaz Clean – Stylized Detail (toned the results down a bit through adjustments)

4) Back  in Aperture, changed the Green Hue to be more yellow.  I then painted the skin to remove the effects of the “yellow.”

5) Decreased the saturation of the Red hue (the orange lantern in the background was annoying me).

6) Decreased the Blue saturation — the chair in the background was too blue.

And there you have it… my UPS man.

We had too much candy left over from Halloween.

Cropped and used Auto Enhance Preset in Aperture.  Then used Topaz Simplify – Image Crisp Edge. Then back in Aperture, added Vignette.

There are so many different effects in Topaz that were interesting, but I decided for the theme to stick with the more realistic finishing.  I might use this photo again in the future with a different effect.
